Grant & Eisenhofer has opened a Chicago office with plans to expand into consumer litigation. Heading the office is Adam Levitt, who joins from Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz, where he was a partner.

Levitt, who recently has handled cases involving genetically modified food and filed class actions against ConAgra Foods Inc. and DuPont Agriculture, also focuses on antitrust and securities matters.

Wilmington, Del.-based Grant & Eisenhofer, with additional offices in New York and Washington, generally represents institutional investors in securities, corporate governance and derivative matters.

It negotiated an $89 million settlement for shareholders in the 2011 buyout of Del Monte Corp. by private equity firms. Last year, the 70-attorney firm represented the lead whistleblower in reaching a $1.6 billion settlement of a False Claims Act case against Abbott Laboratories involving the drug Depakote.

Levitt, the only attorney in Grant & Eisenhofer's new office, said he expects to add lawyers in the near future. He declined to say if they would come from Wolf Haldenstein.

Wolf Haldenstein senior partner Fred Isquith said through a spokeswoman that the firm "wishes Adam all the best."

A 1993 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, Levitt worked at Wolf Haldenstein for 13 years before starting at Grant & Eisenhofer on January 28. He said his new firm provides a broader platform for his practice. "It allows me and the firm to go where we want to go," he said.
