ABA Joins Disability Advocates in Pressuring Law School Admission Council

The ABA has informed the Law School Admission Council it's not happy with its handling of requests for special accommodations by takers of the Law School Admission Test. At its midyear meeting, the ABA voted to adopt a resolution urging the council to "ensure that the exam reflects what the exam is designed to measure, and not the test taker's disability."

Baker & McKenzie Boosts Spain Practice by Adding Former Garrigues Managing Partner

Baker & McKenzie has bolstered its Spanish practice with the hire of senior arbitrator Jose Maria Alonso Puig from leading local firm Garrigues. Alonso spent nine years as managing partner of the 2,000-lawyer Spanish giant before standing down in 2009 to head Garrigues' arbitration practice. He will join Baker's Madrid office on March 1.

Miles & Stockbridge Opening a D.C. Office

Driven by client demand, Baltimore-based Miles & Stockbridge is opening a Washington, D.C., office with seven full-time and 11 part-time attorneys. The firm plans to grow the office to between 15 and 20 full-time lawyers, says the firm chairman, who also says the launch is part of a strategy to focus on a broad spectrum of practice areas.

Thompson & Knight Elects First Female Managing Partner

Emily Parker, the first female lawyer at Thompson & Knight and its first female partner, will become its first female managing partner on Feb. 15. Parker joined Thompson & Knight in 1973, after graduating from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.
